India celebrates National Sports Day on 29 August every year. It is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. Hockey is the national game of our country.
Major Dhyan Chand is considered as the wizard (magician) of hockey in India. Hence, our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Announced in 2012 to celebrate the 29th of August as a national sports Day every year to commemorate the 107th birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. In 2023 we are going to celebrate the 12th anniversary of National Sports Day in our country.
The main motive to celebrate this day is to motivate the young children of our country to maximum participate in sports. Not only for the future perspective but also to remain fit in their life.
On this day every school college educational institution will celebrate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, They conduct many activities like games and sports tournaments, Exhibitions, drawing and painting competitions, quizzes, etc. Again all these activities are to be performed to inculcate the young ones about the importance of the day so that they can understand something from the great players of our country.

* He was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.
* He was fond of playing hockey. He played several district, state, and national-level games.
* He won gold medals in the Olympics in the years 1928, 1932, and 1936.
* He was known for his control over the ball dribbling hence he was called the wizard or the magician of this game.
* He played 185 matches and did more than 400 goals in his career and gave victory to India in various important matches.
* He was awarded with Padma Shri in the year 1956.
