Introduction
India celebrates National Sports Day 2024 on 29 August every year. It is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. Hockey is the national game of India.
About Major Dhyan Chand
Major Dhyan Chand is considered hockey’s wizard (magician) in India. Hence, our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Announced in 2012 to celebrate the 29th of August as a national sports Day every year to commemorate the 107th birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. In 2023 we will celebrate the 12th anniversary of National Sports Day in our country.
Objective to Celebrate the day
The main objective to celebrate this day is to motivate the young children of our country to maximum participate in sports and spread the awareness among the youngsters. Not only for the future perspective but also to remain fit in their life.
Celebration of NSD 2024 in KVs
On this day educational institutions will celebrate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, They conduct many activities like games and sports tournaments, Exhibitions, drawing and painting competitions, quizzes, etc. Again all these activities are to be performed to inculcate the young ones about the importance of the day so that they can understand something from the great players of our country.
In Kendriya Vidyalayas, many activities are conducted like indoor and outdoor games – Kho-Kho, kabbadi, shuttle run, volyball matches etc. apart from that event like speech, debate and quizzes are also organised in the Kendriya Vidyalayas.

- He was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.
- He was fond of playing hockey. He played several district, state, and national-level games.
- He won gold medals in the Olympics in the years 1928, 1932, and 1936.
- He was known for his control over the ball dribbling hence he was called the wizard or the magician of this game.
- He played 185 matches and did more than 400 goals in his career and gave victory to India in various important matches.
- He was awarded with Padma Shri in the year 1956.
