Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7th May 1861 in Jorasanko, Kolkata West Bengal. His mother’s name was Sarada Devi and his father’s name was Debendra Nath Tagore. This year we are celebrating his 163rd birth anniversary.
Rabindranath Tagore was born into a prosperous family of Bengal. He was not sent to any school for education in his childhood.
Arrangements for his education were made at home in Kolkata, West Bengal.
His father sent him to England for further studies.
He was a famous poet and wrote many dramas, novels, stories, and poems. His greatest and most famous poem is ‘Gitanjali’ (a collection of poems). Gitanjali was originally written in Bengali language and later translated it into English. You may see the title page of Gitanjali below:
Rabindranath Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was the first Indian to receive the Nobel Prize.
In 1901, he founded a school in Bolpur, West Bengal. He named it ‘Santiniketan‘. This school became famous in all over the world. It does not have any huge buildings. Students acquire education in the lap of nature.
He had many disciples, who called him “Gurudev” with great respect.
He died on 7th August 1941.
